Pediatric Low Vision Program
Dukes Pediatric Low Vision Program helps children with low vision
function maximally in their educational environment.
Low vision can be the result of childhood conditions such as:
-
Various retinal and optical nerve abnormalities
-
Nystagmus (a condition that causes involuntary eye movement)
During an evaluation, a low vision specialist determines what type of
assistive devices and strategies would best serve the child in the
school and at home; usually a Teacher for the visually impaired (TVI)
then works with the child and the school to implement the
recommendations, communicating back with the low vision specialist if
any questions or issues arise.
Patient/Family/School Support
Teamwork provides the best assistance to children with low vision. In
addition to regular ophthalmic care, children with low vision often work
with specialists from the Governor Morehead program (in infancy and
early childhood) and then with TVIs once they enter elementary school.
Other health care providers (including social workers) may also
participate in the care of children with low vision who have additional
medical or therapy needs.
