Referrals/Services

Neuro-Ophthalmology Service

Consultations and treatments provided by specialists in the Neuro-Ophthalmology Service include:

  • Chiasmal disorders
  • Compressive optic nerve lesions
  • Ischemic optic neuropathy
  • Optic neuritis
  • Papilledema
  • Ocular motor palsies (III, IV, or VI)
  • Supranuclear disorders of eye movement
  • Ocular myasthenia
  • Thyroid eye disease
  • Proptosis of unknown cause
  • Pupillary abnormalities
  • Unexplained vision loss
  • Visual field defects from strokes or intracranial tumors
  • Optic nerve disorders
  • Transient vision loss
  • Visual disturbances
  • Double vision
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Eyelid abnormalities
  • Unequal pupil size
  • Nystagmus
  • Migraine
  • Amaurosis fugax
  • Temporal arteritis

Patients are scheduled for Neuro-Ophthalmology consultations on referral from an eye doctor, neurologist, neurosurgeon, or other physician.

A clinical summary, either a referral letter or copies of medical reports, should be sent to the Eye Center before the appointment.

Neuro-ophthalmologic evaluations are carried out at Duke Eye Center. Because the Eye Center is located adjacent to Duke Hospital, there is direct access to the full range of diagnostic service, including neuro-imaging (MRI, CT) and consultation with physicians in the departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery.
