Glaucoma Service
The Glaucoma Service is dedicated to excellence in the diagnosis and
treatment of glaucoma, a disease that causes permanent damage to the
optic nerve. Glaucoma is the most common cause of permanent blindness in
the world today. There are more than two million people with glaucoma in
the United States and 70 million worldwide. In most cases, there are no
symptoms other than vision loss, which frequently goes undetected until
late in the disease's course. There is no treatment for vision loss;
however, glaucoma can be successfully controlled in most cases through
the use of medicines (eye drops), and/or laser or conventional surgery.
The Duke Glaucoma Service excels in delivering the most advanced
treatment available to patients with glaucoma.
