Background

David Wallace, MD, is a pediatric ophthalmologist and adult strabismus specialist. He has particular interest in treating strabismus (misalignment of the eyes), childhood cataracts, and retinopathy of prematurity. He also manages patients with other pediatric eye problems such as amblyopia, nasolacrimal duct obstruction and refractive errors. Wallace is the recipient of an achievement award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and an honor award from the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. He has been honored among the Best Doctors in America.

Research Interests

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) - Wallace is the principal investigator for an NIH-sponsored study of the predictive value of abnormal dilation and tortuosity of retinal blood vessels (pre-plus disease) in infants with retinopathy of prematurity. He is also co-principal investigator at Duke for an NIH-sponsored, multi-center trial to evaluate early treatment for retinopathy of prematurity. He was one of 15 ophthalmologists from six countries chosen to revise the International Classification of ROP. He is co-instructor of a course on ROP taught at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting.

Clinical trials in ophthalmology – Wallace is involved in the design, implementation, data analysis, and presentation of results for several prospective, multicenter clinical trials performed by the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG). These studies include clinical trials comparing treatment regimens for amblyopia and evaluation of treatment for esotropia and nasolacrimal duct obstruction. He is protocol chair for three such studies and serves on multiple PEDIG steering committees and study planning committees.
