Background

Prithvi Mruthyunjaya, MD, specializes in the diagnosis and management of primary ocular cancers, including ocular surface and iris tumors, malignant uveal melanoma, and retinoblastoma. He will assist medical oncologists in the management of vision problems in patients with non-ocular cancers including screening for metastatic eye disease and cancer treatment (chemotherapy or radiotherapy)-related complications. He works closely with physicians from the Duke Comprehensive Cancer center and coordinates multi-disciplinary care.

Mruthyunjaya also specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases of the retina including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal vascular disease and complex retinal detachments. His expertise encompasses the latest advances in vitreoretinal surgical techniques including macular translocation for advanced AMD, all forms of retinal laser surgery - photodynamic therapy, laser photocoagulation, and transpupillary thermotherapy - and administering intraocular injections to treat macular degeneration and diabetes.

He continues to be actively involved in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows at the Eye Center.
