4. Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Program

Applications are sought from candidates for a Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Program supported by a K12 grant from the National Eye Institute. The program provides salary and other support for the training of promising young physicians into clinician-scientists. The program offers a customized and structured learning, research, and development environment to qualified, clinically-trained candidates, who plan an academic career in Ophthalmology that will focus on human diseases that affect vision and the eye. A pool of senior investigators are available to act as mentors to guide candidates in their selection of training tracks and courses appropriate to their academic career goals.

Trainees will participate in an intensive program designed to provide the guidance, resources, and didactic teaching necessary to produce clinician-scientists for academic positions in Ophthalmology. Two trainees, who have recently completed a residency or post-residency subspecialty fellowship, will be selected each year for an intense 3 year educational program. Six primary research tracks are available: 1) Ophthalmic genomics and proteomics, 2) Ophthalmic pathology, 3) Translational medicine, 4) Clinical trials, 5) Research from the clinic to the bench and visa versa, 6) Outcomes and health policy. Some tracks lead to a graduate degree (Master of Heath Sciences in Clinical Research, Master of Genome Sciences, PhD in Pathology). Trainees will undergo an intensive didactic curriculum combined with a close mentorship by senior faculty leading to independent peer-reviewed grant funding and an academic faculty position. Each trainee will receive mandatory training in clinical research, scientific writing, grant preparation, ethics, and the responsible conduct of research as well as in topics relevant to a primary research track. Each trainee will participate in significant original research on diseases that affect the eye and vision. Additional aspects of each curriculum are tailored to the selected primary research track and his/her skills, background and career goals.

While this unique program is administered at the Duke Eye Center, it incorporates facilities and courses available at Duke University, including the Genome Sciences and Policy Institute, Center for Human Genetics, Duke General Clinical Research Center, Duke Clinical Research Institute, and Duke University Comprehensive Cancer Center. The program is enhanced by interactions with neighboring institutions and the Research Triangle Park, which contains GlaxoSmithKline, the largest pharmaceutical company in the world, as well as other institutions such as the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, SAS, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Please note the NIH guidelines stipulate that participants in this program must be US citizens or permanent residents and they must devote 75-80% of the time to research. Two competitive positions are currently available and applications will be accepted from individuals who have completed a residency in Ophthalmology or Pathology. Applications should be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, a letter describing career goals, and the names of three references. Applications and inquiries should be sent to Gordon K. Klintworth, MD, PhD, Duke Eye Center, PO Box 3802, Durham, NC 27710, or by email to gordon.klintworth@duke.edu. You can also call 919-684-3550 for further inquiry.
